iPhone: The spark that lit the fire that burned the forest?

Posted on: July 5th, 2007
As I wrote earlier here (http://www.pehub.com/wordpress/?p=303), WiFi gadgets that can provide Internet, video, and voice with no carrier subscription are coming. To date no such devices have been widely popular or deployed. They have a decent chance of changing Cingular’s and Verizon’s business, forever.

I for one was surprised to realize that the iPhone is a likely catalyst for this. Hacker “DVD Jon” Johansen already has the phone’s iPod and Web working with no carrier at all. Next step is to ramp up Skype or similar, so it can be used as an unlimited-free-calling phone.

  1. Pete Tenereillo Says:

Demo (at “Demo”) of VOIP service to make calls using the iPhone via the Internet - i.e. not using carrier voice network.
