The Stockholm based start-up is backed by Index Ventures, Passion Capital and Creandum, as well as angel investors from Soundcloud, Wrapp and Path.

Tripbirds today announces it steps into public beta and is opening up the service to anyone looking to discover places and plan trips based on recommendations from friends in their social network.

The social travel site helps you see the world through the eyes of friends by collecting their Facebook and Foursquare check-ins and geo-tagged Instagram photos, grouping them by destination and making it easy for you to see, and ask for, recommendations.

Tripbirds’ mission is to add a travel layer on top of many online social networks allowing users to see and access all ‘travel related’ updates in one place. If you are planning a trip to Paris, Tripbirds let’s you discover which of your friends live there, friends’ recent visits, the hotels they stayed at — and all the associated recommendations.

Ted Valentin, CEO at Tripbirds comments: “Tripbirds is purely based on the travel activity of people within your social network. We only show activity from people you know and trust — it’s quality before quantity. Over the last year, location tagged content from friends has gained the critical mass needed for this approach to really work.”

Christoffer Klang, who participated in the private beta in the last few weeks, expresses why he is fan: “The site is absolutely gorgeous and the aggregated information about where I’ve been makes me excited about check-ins again. The site works best when you get roughly 10-15 friends to join the site. Then, it becomes fun as you can check out friends’ travel profiles and start to save travel tips and experiences from mates.”

“Most location-based services have a strong focus on the here and now, but we’ve turned that on its head. The main focus of Tripbirds is your friends’ past activity in destinations all over the world,” concludes Valentin.

Venture capital companies Index Ventures, Passion Capital, Creandum and angel investors Peter Read, Andreas Ehn (ex CTO at Spotify, and co-founder of Wrapp), Eric Wahlforss and Alexander Ljung (Soundcloud founders) and Dave Morin (Path founder) back Tripbirds and provided its seed funding in late 2011.

Ben Holmes, Index Ventures, says: “People are increasingly using the internet not just as functional tool for organising travel but as place to learn and be inspired about destinations and journeys. Social adds a new dimension to the online travel experience and we felt Tripbirds had the most compelling vision and the most innovative approach. Their service helps people extract travel information from their existing social network and instantly turns this it into something useful for them — trip recommendations. Increasingly, web users want to rely on travel advice from people they are connected to and trust.”
