Ministry of Supply, the first performance professional menswear brand, today announced that it has raised a total of $1.1 million in seed funding to expand its tech-infused line of clothing. Tony Hsieh’s VegasTechFund led the round, with participants including Boston Red Sox pitcher Craig Breslow, SK Ventures and Kevin Henrikson.
Ministry of Supply is building a new category of clothing for men who want to perform as well in the boardroom as they do on the field. Launched via Kickstarter in 2012, Ministry of Supply has had two of the top five most popular fashion campaigns on the site. Since then, the brand has continued to see incredible growth, validating the demand for clothing that is as comfortable and functional as workout gear but still delivers the polished, stylish look necessary for a professional environment.
“Technology has made the process of buying clothes easier than ever before, but the experience of wearing your favorite dress shirt has remained virtually unchanged for decades. Busy men shouldn’t have to choose between performance or style, and we think there is a huge opportunity to approach menswear with an eye toward innovation,” said Gihan Amarasiriwardena, Ministry of Supply’s co-founder and CEO. “This funding will support us as we continue to build new products and meet a market need to arm smart, tech-savvy men with workwear that incorporates cutting-edge fabrics and design to meet the rigors of daily life.”
This latest news comes on the heels of the announcement that renowned e-commerce and UX design veteran Brian Kalma joined the Ministry of Supply team as President earlier this year. Kalma was an early employee at Zappos and most recently worked at Gilt Groupe and Gemvara, where he played a key role in defining user experience.
Co-founders Gihan Amarasiriwardena, Kit Hickey and Aman Advani were college athletes and outdoor enthusiasts who wanted to feel as confident and comfortable in work meetings as they did hiking a mountain or scaling a climbing wall. Blurring the line between the seemingly disparate worlds of outdoorsmanship and the workplace, Ministry of Supply offers first-in-class products that incorporate the best of both tech and fashion.
The current collection includes:
• Apollo 2.0 Dress Shirt: Born from spacesuits, this classic dress shirt incorporates the same materials NASA uses to help regulate temperature, helping the body adjust from hot to cold environments. Anti-microbial and moisture-wicking features keep men cool and odor-free. $98.
• Aero Slack: Taking inspiration from jets, these professional pants feature scoop laminated pocket entries and RADIATOR Mesh to provide ventilation. Its dynamic, four-way stretch fabric allows unrestricted movement. $138.
• Atmos Base Layer: Ministry of Supply studied where heat gathers and crafted these base layer shirts with four different panels, all 3D robotically knit together. The varying fabric density helps keep the body cool and increases airflow. $38.
• Core Performance Base Layer: This base layer shirt is an indispensable basic that helps keep the body cooler in hot environments and warmer in cold environments with unrivaled moisture control. $28.
Ministry of Supply is based in Boston and continues to expand their line with new offerings on the way, including the popular ATLAS Sock, which is infused with activated coffee beans to control odor and features a robotically knit, pressure mapped design to ensure socks fit to the foot and stay in place.
