SoundFocus, a startup building the next generation of hearingtechnology, announced today that it has raised $1.7 million in seed funding. Its investors include Kapor Capital,Y Combinator, Greg Badros, VegasTechFund, OVO Fund, RTA Capital, Garry Tan, Alexis Ohanian and Harj Taggar.
“More than 5 million songs have been played with SoundFocus since we launched our app. Now our goal is to give people 20/20 hearing in their everyday lives,” said CEO Alex Selig. “One in five Americans over the age of 12 have hearing loss and millions more face situational hearing challenges every day. You should never have trouble hearing what you need to hear.”
The SoundFocus app for iOS personalizes music by tuning the audio to your unique hearing pattern. The app first has you take a simple hearing test that captures how well you hear particular frequencies of sound and then uses that data to tune the music playback accordingly.
The software employs signal processing algorithms to rebalance audio to match your listening needs —
compensating for specific frequencies that you have trouble hearing clearly. This technology enables compensation for hearing loss and also allows you to tune for the acoustics of the room, background noise, and your audio hardware.
The SoundFocus team is working on a hardware device that will handle not just your phone’s music library but also everyday situations, like making phone calls or watching TV.
The company is an outgrowth of its founders’ lives. Alex Selig grew up with hearing loss, and dreams of making excellent hearing available to everyone. Alex met his cofounder, Varun Srinivasan, while working at Microsoft, and they have built a team that will change the way the world hears.
