Is Steve Jobs Moving to Memphis?
I spoke with a well-connected business person in Memphis this morning who says that there is a house in a swank neighborhood there that has been bought for a princely sum and is undergoing minor renovations in preparation for its new resident.
He says he has reason to believe Apple CEO Steve Jobs is moving to the city to treat his pancreatic cancer.
Normally, I’d just throw this out as wild speculation. Except St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis happens to be one of the best endocrinology centers in the world and one of the top oncology spots for kids. If there’s one place in the U.S. with researchers equipped to tackle Jobs’ health problems, St. Jude may be it.
Just to be clear, this is a single source tip. We’ve decided not to chase it further as it’s not about VCs, but I thought you might enjoy speculating about it.

When you’ve got your own private jet (and someone else pays the fees and costs of running it for you) then moving to Memphis wouldn’t seem like much of a solution to me. First off, St. Judes is a CHILDREN’s Hospital. While I’m sure they would not turn away SJ – especially with a princely contribution to the cause in lieu of payment for his own care or in addition to it – seems to me he could simply “fetch” their specialists to CA every few weeks and keep them up on labs, etc., electronically. With the jet parked near his home in CA and a pre-arranged transport in Memphis – he could leave his house in CA and be checking into the hospital in a matter of four hours in a pinch. Why move? Seems cheaper and far more practical to stay in CA. And then again, Apple is there, too. Don’t think he’s going to leave Apple without moving heaven, earth, and hell to avoid doing so! Do you?

He does, eh? What reason?

It is interesting, but it just doesn’t sound right to “enjoy speculating” about someone seeking help with their serious health problems. If it is true, I hope that he is just left alone.

And this is why we need to support our newspapers…
I’m sorry, but single-sourced rumors have NO PLACE in any reporting medium that considers itself to be even slightly serious.
Go and get yourself a journalism degree and try it again.
You give every evidence of not having the slightest idea what you are doing.

All profits from this shirt go to the kids at St. Jude.

People need to understand the multi-faceted roles that the researchers and doctors have at St. Jude. The doctors at St. Jude often 1) teach at UT Health Science Center; 2) assist in treating or conduct surgery at LeBonheur Children’s Hospital (the children’s trauma center); and I’m certain also do treatment/surgeries at 3) Methodist Hospital, which a) conducts adult care, b) operates LeBonheur, and c) has the state record for transplants in Tennessee.
None of this, however, explains why Jobs would MOVE to Memphis (although I think he should and would support such a move), since there is no residency requirement for transplants.

Reference for 3c) is http://www.bizjournals.com/memphis/stories/2007/11/26/daily25.html, which is, I concede, 2 years old, but is specific to liver transplants. Also, the quote in the WSJ about the three hospitals support Methodist Hospital being the location. Vandy said he WASN’T a patient, Methodist only said there was no record of his name as a patient.
