Proterro said Monday it completed a $3.5 million financing round led by current investor Braemar Energy Ventures. Cultivian Ventures and Middleland Capital joined as new investors, with other existing investors, Battelle Ventures and its affiliate, Innovation Valley Partners, also participating in the round. Proterro, of Ewing, N.J., makes sucrose instead of extracting it from crops.

NexSteppe, a developer of sustainable feedstock solutions for the biofuels, biopower and biobased products industries, has raised $16 $14 million. Braemar Energy Ventures led the second round for NexSteppe. As a result, Dennis Costello, a partner at Braemar Energy Ventures, has joined the company’s board. Returning investors CYM Ventures and Zygote Ventures also participated.

Stion, a manufacturer of thin-film solar modules, has raised $130 million in equity financing led by AVACO and Korean private equity funds. Existing investors Khosla Ventures, Taiwan Semiconductor, Lightspeed Venture Partners, Braemar Energy Ventures and General Catalyst Partners all participated in the round, the company said. The money will help Stion continue a planned expansion of its manufacturing facility in Hattiesburg, Miss. The company will also put $35 million into a Korean manufacturing subsidiary. Stion is based in San Jose, Calif.
