Zappos CEO Tony Hsieh is endeavoring to do something more ambitious than ever before. He’s trying to transform 1.5 miles of arid, dust-caked downtown Las Vegas into a bustling entrepreneurial center with up to $350 million of his own money. The question is whether he can pull it off without someone to simply say, “no.”

Much has been written about how popular crowdfunding sites like Kickstarter are merely scratching the surface of a big funding vacuum – and taking on venture capitalists in the process. But Kickstarter may ultimately evolve into more than a replacement to VC or even a lead-in to it. Today, in fact, it becomes a direct retail outlet for a fully baked product.
