Houston, Texas-based private equity firm Quantum Energy Partners has made a majority investment in Carmel Bay Exploration Ltd., the firm announced. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Carmel Bay is a Calgary-based upstream exploration and development company focused on acquiring and developing assets in the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin. The company was founded in late 2011.

Quantum Energy Partners has appointed Michael C. Linn, former chairman, president and chief executive officer of LINN Energy to the firm as a senior advisor and a member of its industry advisory board. Linn will work with Quantum’s senior management team providing counsel on both investment and industry related matters.

Quantum Energy Partners said Thursday that it’s formed Bluestem Energy, which will buy oil and gas producing properties in North America. Bluestem is expected to have up to $1 billion in equity from Quantum, co-investors and management.

Quantum Energy Partners has formed Quantum Utility Generation, which will buy and develop conventional and alternative energy projects in North America. The Houston company will be capitalized with $1 billion of equity, $500 million of which has been committed by Quantum. Another $500 million in equity will come from other co-investing financial and strategic partners. Quantum is a buyout shop w iht more than $5.7 billion of assets under management.
