On Deck said it raised $17 million as an expansion of its Series D financing in a deal led by Google Ventures and joined by PayPal co-founder Peter Thiel and Industry Ventures. The Series D now totals $59 million, with $42 million having closed in February. The first tranche of Series D financing was led by Institutional Venture Partners and joined by RRE Ventures, SAP Ventures and First Round Capital.

WhipTail, a Whippany, N.J.-based flash based storage company, has raised a $31 million Series C round of funding from SanDisk, Ignition Partners, RRE Ventures and Spring Mountain Capital. Silicon Valley Bank provided debt financing and the company said an unnamed Silicon Valley industry titan also invested.

Braintree said Wednesday that it raised a $35 million Series B round of funding led by New Enterprise Associates . Existing investors, including Accel Partners, RRE Ventures and Greycroft, also participated. Chicago-based Braintree, a payments platform for online and mobile commerce, has raised a total of $70 million in funding.
