Synthasite Buying ClickPass

SynthaSite, a San Francisco-based developer of a Web 2.0 publishing platform, has agreed to acquire Clickpass, an OpenID provider that offers authentication gateway solutions. Synthasite has raised $5 million in VC funding from Columbus Venture Capital, while Clickpass was backed by Ycombinator.

SynthaSite, the leading do-it-yourself free Web site builder, today announced it has agreed to acquire Clickpass, an OpenID provider and authentication gateway that simplifies OpenID integration and use.

The acquisition enables SynthaSite to create a dedicated focus on identity services and seamless integration with its partner sites. As SynthaSite becomes a focal point for both businesses and communities online, Clickpass provides a powerful identity platform for the company to integrate and develop upon.

“At SynthaSite, our strong network of partner sites and service providers has set us apart, enabling users to easily integrate everything from a Shopping Cart to a Widgetbox widget,” said Vinny Lingham, CEO of SynthaSite. “Now, by acquiring the superior OpenID technology Clickpass has created, we’ll be able to eliminate the hassle of having to enter all of your account information again when visiting our partner sites, making it even easier to have a seamless Web site building experience.”

Clickpass’ founder and CEO, Peter Nixey, said, “This is a very exciting opportunity for Clickpass as it creates an opportunity to continue developing our identity platform whilst at the same time creating a network of hundreds of thousands of sites to which we can immediately deploy new services.” Peter will be joining SynthaSite as Vice President of Trust, Identity and Reputation.
