Australian hospitality-tech startup Liven has recently closed a $10 million (AUD) funding round to fuel its growth across Australia but also internationally. The startup was founded in Melbourne in June 2014, and expanded their service to include Sydney in Q1 2016 after a successful seed round of $1 million AUD at the end of 2015. The new funding was raised through a Melbourne based venture capital firm which itself has sourced backing from international contributors.

The Liven platform is app based and rewards users with cashback every time they dine at participating restaurants. Whenever users pay through the app, their account is credited with a minimum of 25% of the bill back as cashback, which can be spent the next time they dine, or paid out to their bank account as real cash. To make this possible, the team developed their own mobile payment technologies, allowing users to process their restaurant bills through the Liven app at the tap of a button, in a way that is reminiscent of paying for a ride with Uber.

The Liven service isn’t only about receiving however, it also has a charity functionality built in.

The app has 10 of Australia’s most popular charities listed as partners, and users are given the option to share their cashback, in whole or part, directly with these charities at the end of each transaction within the app. Donors even receive a tax deductible receipt via email instantly – plus a warm and fuzzy feeling for ‘paying it forward’ and helping those in need.

For now, Liven’s immediate focus is on the expansion to a third Australian city which requires new local hires to drive the growth of a restaurant partnership portfolio. This is currently taking place, with Liven HQ endeavoring to launch Liven’s third city before the end of Q2 2017. Plans to expand into the US and UK markets within 12 months are also now underway, with Liven currently creating an ‘invasion plan’ and deliberating over which cities to first target.

Liven is an entertainment platform that rewards users with cashback for dining at hundreds of their city’s best restaurants. For further information, imagery and interview requests please contact cofounder, Dr. David Ballerini,
