PRESS RELEASE

San Francisco, April, 2017 – Meme search engine Me.me, a platform that makes millions of funny and dank (AKA high quality) memes searchable and shareable announced $1.5 million in new funding. New investors include Arjun Sethi from The Social+Capital Partnership, Peter Rojas from Betaworks Ventures, Danhua Capital, Mirarmar Ventures and many more.

Launched as SIZZLE early last year, the service immediately took off and by the end of 2016 had served 700,000,000 memes in Q4 (a 225% increase over Q3). The platform has been likened to Giphy in its early days due its exceptional growth and focus on an esoteric media format. That comparison became more real as Betaworks’ Giphy’s creator, invested late last year.

“We simply wanted to find memes we’d see in texts and chats” says CEO Shane Walker. “That is when it struck us that no one had created a search engine specifically for memes. And like Giphy, we started growing fast because there was a massively untapped need for meme search engine.”

Memes are steadily growing in greater and greater popularity. At the start of 2016 the death of a mountain gorilla, called Harambe, at Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden sparked a huge meme movement. According to Google Trends, memes overall growth over the last 10 years shows no signs of decelerating. Others have hinted that memes shaped the outcome of the US election that Donald J. Trump won.

“Memes are very rich pieces of media,” Walker continues, “So we use data science and computer vision to make sense of the over millions of memes being found daily. As a result, we’re starting to be able to plot trends and make predictions of future memes.”
