Future Planet Capital has acquired a stake in Halo Neuroscience for $1 million. Based in San Francisco, Halo Neuroscience is a creator of Halo Sport, a neurostimulation headset.
[30 April 2018, London] – Future Planet Capital (“FPC”), the global innovation investment platform, is pleased to announce it has taken a US$1m stake in Halo Neuroscience (“Halo”), a human performance company improving lives through neuroscience and technology.
This marks FPC’s first investment since its inaugural fund, The Future Planet Capital Fund (“The Fund”), launched in February with an initial US$220m Cornerstone commitment from a British Pension Fund and TW & Partners (“TWP”).
Halo, based in San Francisco, is already well established in the sports performance and consumer fitness markets having produced Halo Sport, the first consumer neurostimulation headset designed to accelerate performance gains from physical training. The headset is currently used by the US Olympic Ski Team, San Francisco Giants and US Special Operations Forces.
Founded by a management team from Stanford University Medical School with deep scientific, medical and engineering experience, Halo Sport uses proprietary neuropriming technology to enhance brain control and activate key muscles.
Halo announced in January this year that it had secured US$14m in Series B funding with an investment led by leading private equity firm, TPG, with additional funding from existing investors Xfund, Lux Capital and JAZZ Venture Partners.
As the company’s first European investor, FPC will support Halo’s expansion into global markets, initially through Halo Sport, with introductions to strategic geographies such as China. This deal is a strong example of FPC’s thesis in action, connecting the biggest investors, to the brightest minds in order to profitably address global challenges.
FPC’s investment will also help to fund the development and launch of future products. Research from leading universities such as Harvard University suggests that transcranial direct stimulation could have positive effects on addressing other health conditions. While Halo Sport is primarily a physical training aid, Halo are excited about the wider medical applications of their technology, with clinical trials already underway in stroke rehabilitation.
Douglas Hansen-Luke, Executive Chairman at Future Planet Capital, said:
“We are delighted to support Halo as it enters the next phase of its journey. Halo’s vision as a successful company looking to improve the lives of the people is very much aligned with our ambition of delivering returns and tackling the world’s greatest challenges.
Halo’s proprietary technology has already proven its considerable capability in the consumer fitness market and we’re excited to see how this can be adapted into other markets and applications, ultimately improving lives through neuroscience and technology.”
Daniel Chao, CEO & Co-Founder at Halo Neuroscience, added:
“We are thrilled that Future Planet Capital has become our latest investor. In a round that was substantially over subscribed, we were seeking partners that could add long-term value and help us extend our global presence. By drawing upon Future Planet Capital’s experience and international presence, we have already starting to develop our short and medium-term targets. We are excited for the future and very much look forward to working with Future Planet Capital.”
