Topping the agenda for the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission in 2019 will be bitcoin regulation, according to a report issued by the financial watchdog agency. The cryptocurrency industry ranks as one of the agency’s top “examination priorities” for the new year. The SEC’s Office of Compliance Inspections and Examinations will conduct the monitoring, which will be done for the purpose of protecting retail investors as well as ensure regulatory compliance. According to bitcoin news site CCN, the SEC’s actions are coming on the heels of a period where CEO Jay Clayton was blasted for the agency taking a hard-line approach to the cryptocurrency sector, resulting in crackdowns on ICOs, which critics felt were “detrimental to innovation.”
