The Carlyle Group has hired Michael Silverstein as an operating executive for its global consumer & retail group. His appointment becomes effective January 2, 2017.
Silverstein is joining Carlyle from management consulting giant Boston Consulting Group where he has served as a senior partner and managing director since 1993. He first came on board at BCG in 1980. There he has helped the company beef up its consumer practice as he advised CEOs of multimillion dollar global companies.
Considered an expert in the consumer packaged goods and retail sectors, Silverstein is the author of five books on consumers. Of special interest to him are the buying habits of women, emerging market consumers and millennials. His books include “Trading Up,” which analyzes middle-class consumers buying luxury goods; and “Women Want More,” about women’s purchasing behavior around the globe.
Currently, Carlyle has invested about $12 billion in 76 deals in the consumer and retail categories. Among them are Dunkin’ Brands, CVC, Vogue and Acosta.
