Anthony Miller has joined Asian alternative investment manager Pacific Alliance Group as president and CEO of a newly-formed Japanese unit. He previously was president of Ramius Japan Ltd., where he will remain a senior advisor. Before that, he was with The Carlyle Group as a managing director and head of the firm’s Hong Kong office.
Pacific Alliance Group, the Asian alternative investment manager, today announces the appointment of Anthony Miller as President and Chief Executive Officer of the newly formed unit, Pacific Alliance Japan Limited. Mr. Miller joins Pacific Alliance Group from Ramius LLC, where he will remain a Senior Advisor to Ramius Japan Ltd. and to Ramius LLC.
This appointment marks a significant step in Pacific Alliance’s expansion plans in Japan, where the Group is in the process of building its team of investment professionals. Pacific Alliance intends to open its Tokyo office on 1 July 2009 and will pursue investments in Japan’s real estate, distressed debt and private placement markets.
Today’s news builds on the Group’s March 2009 approximately US$ 45 million strategic investment and partnership with Secured Capital Japan, the Tokyo Stock Exchange First Section listed real estate asset manager with approximately US$ 5 billion in assets under management.
Mr. Miller has been active in the investment banking and institutional direct investment industry for over 18 years. He is currently President of Ramius Japan Ltd., having built Ramius’s business in Hong Kong and Japan since joining in 2001. Mr. Miller was previously a Managing Director and head of the Hong Kong office for private equity firm, The Carlyle Group.
Mr. Miller joins Jun Daikuhara, Chairman of Pacific Alliance Japan Limited and formerly Executive Officer for Shinsei Bank and Representative Director for Shinsei Investment Management Co.. Mr Miller will assume his new role as of 1 July 2009. Both Mr. Miller and Mr. Daikuhara sit on the board of directors of Secured Capital Japan, and Mr. Miller is a member of Secured’s investment committee.

Anthony Miller has worked in the investment banking and institutional direct investment industry for over 18 years. Prior to joining Ramius LLC in 2001, Mr. Miller was a Managing Director at ARKaccess, a global electronic trading company. Previously, he was a Managing Director and the head of the Hong Kong office for The Carlyle Group. Mr. Miller was on both the Board of Directors of Carlyle Asia Investment Advisors, Ltd. and the investment committee of The Carlyle Asia Fund. While at Carlyle, Mr. Miller started Carlyle’s operations in Hong Kong and Seoul and in pursued and monitored Carlyle’s investments throughout Asia.
Previously, Mr. Miller was a Managing Director and Head of Corporate Finance for Bear Stearns Asia, and he was a Managing Director in the Mergers and Acquisitions Group of Bear Stearns New York.
Mr. Miller is currently a member of the Board of Directors of Pacific Alliance Asia Opportunities Fund Limited (AIM listed) and Secured Capital Japan(Tokyo Stock Exchange listed). He has previously been on the Board of Directors of Fruehauf Trailer Corp., Plywood Panels Inc., Research Oil Co., Taiwan Broadband Corp. and The Ecko-Glaco Company and a trustee of The East Harlem Tutorial Program.
Mr. Miller graduated with honors in Economics and Urban Studies from Brown University and with distinction from the Harvard University Graduate School of Business.
