Michael Stephenson has joined Augusta Columbia Capital as an MD based in New York. He will focus on software and services. Most recently, Stephenson was with Citigroup Japan, where he oversaw the divestiture of Citi’s Nikko Cordial related businesses.
Augusta Columbia Capital, a private equity firm specializing in middle market growth and technology company buyouts, announced today that Michael D. Stephenson has joined the firm as a Managing Director based in the firm’s New York office. Mr. Stephenson will focus on software and services investments for the firm.
Mr. Stephenson joins Augusta Columbia from Citigroup Japan, where he held various leadership positions since 2007. As a senior executive in Citi Japan Holdings, Mr. Stephenson oversaw the divestiture of Citi’s Nikko Cordial related businesses, as well as the divestiture of Citi’s significant portfolio of private equity investments. Mr. Stephenson’s private equity responsibilities included leading the successful turnaround and sale of BellSystems24, Japan’s leading provider of customer relationship management and business process outsourcing services.
Mr. Stephenson, a former long-term member of the technology private equity team at Citigroup Venture Capital (CVC), rejoins Chip Schorr at Augusta Columbia, who was also previously a CVC principal. At CVC, Mr. Schorr and Mr. Stephenson collaborated on numerous investments, most notably i-flex solutions. Mr. Stephenson helped i-flex’s management team grow the company to become the global leader in bank automation software and the premier provider of software development services to the financial services industry, culminating in the company’s highly successful sale to Oracle in 2005. Prior to joining Citigroup, Mr. Stephenson served as the founding CFO of GiftCertificates.com. His previous experience includes nearly a decade as an investment banker at Merrill Lynch in the U.S., Asia and Europe.
“We are thrilled to welcome Mike back to the team and add his deep software and services background,” said Mr. Schorr, Augusta Columbia founder and Managing Partner. “Mike brings a unique set of experience including sector specific knowledge, operating experience, and feet-on-the-ground Asia investing experience. Having worked with Mike for many years, we know that he will have an immediate impact on our ability to source and optimize investments.”
“I am very excited to rejoin Chip and the rest of the Augusta Columbia Capital team,” said Mr. Stephenson. “To join a world class team with whom I have worked before and invest with a highly differentiated strategy is exactly what I want to do at this point in my career. I believe that Augusta Columbia’s focus will allow us to excel in our markets.”
Augusta Columbia’s team now includes Jamie Urry, David ibnAle, Ron Collins, Mike Stephenson, Clayton Albertson and Martyn Moskovich, all of whom have worked together before, building on the firm’s shared history from CVC and Blackstone.
