Please say a prayer for the future of American journalism. No, not because Rupert Murdoch has agreed to buy Dow Jones – but because “the world’s only reliable newspaper” is closing its doors after nearly 30 years of service.
That paper, of course, is World Weekly News – which has scooped the MSM on such stories as Hillary Clinton’s torrid affair with extraterrestrial P’lod, and President Bush’s attempt to succeed John Paul II. Not to mention all the Elvis sightings.
But the public good seems to have once again been trumped by finances, as WWN publisher American Media has decided to pull the plug. Something about a 90% circulation decline since the 1980s heyday, but I smell conspiracy on the part of American Media owners Thomas H. Lee Partners and Evercore Partners.
The two buyout firms have spent months trying to sell American Media to Yucapia Cos., which is run by Clinton supporter Ron Burkle. Could it be that Burkle was offended by the P’lod expose, and TH Lee and Evercore decided to extend an olive branch?
If only WWN was still around to investigate…
