Canada Pension Plan Investment Board enjoyed a healthy 2016 with its private equity portfolio generating nearly $4.5 billion in returns. This windfall was led by funds from Advent International, Apax Partners and Kohlberg Kravis Roberts.
Advent International’s sixth global private equity fund led, producing some $213.8 million over those 12 months. Advent International GPE VI also has the highest investment multiple of both top-five lists, with 2.3x. Apax Partners’s seventh European buyout fund brought in $178.6 million. KKR’s vintage-2007 Asian Fund followed in third place by churning out $158.2 million.
In terms of distribution percentage (cash out from the year divided by overall cash in), Bain Capital led the way. Bain Capital Europe IV produced a 51.3 percent distribution.
Next was Actera Partners’ maiden fund. The firm’s 2006 vintage turned out a 48.1 distribution percentage. Advent International GPE VI made an appearance as well, generating a 47.3 distribution percentage. Overall, the portfolio’s distribution percentage from 2016 is 12.4 percent.
All told, CPPIB’s PE portfolio has about $52.1 billion committed to 207 active funds. Those active funds have combined for nearly $36.1 billion drawn, with $29.7 billion cashed out as of Dec. 31, 2016.
