EnCap Investments LP brought a close to its fundraising efforts on EnCap Energy Capital Fund IX LP. The Houston shop picked up $5 billion, the investment vehicle’s cap. The target was $4.25 billion. Serent Capital LLC also held the first and final close of Serent Capital II LP at its $350 million cap. The San Francisco shop had a $300 million goal.

In addition, Sun Capital Partners Inc.’s $1 billion interim close of Sun Capital Partners VI LP puts it a third of the way towards its target. The close occurred in December and lifted 2012’s fundraising tally to $159.3 billion.

Thomson Reuters, the publisher of Buyouts, counted 37 deals that involved U.S.-based financial sponsors from Jan. 22 to Feb 5. Eight had valuations, led by Carlyle Group LP’s $4.9 billion purchase of DuPont’s performance coating unit. Carlyle completed the deal through its Flash Bermuda Co. Ltd. Bain Capital LLC also acquired Apex Tool Group LLC for $1.6 billion. Year-to-date deal volume rose to about $8.5 billion.
