On the Move, Feb. 4, 2019: Carlyle names 5 partners; GA taps Goldman, Stamas, Kotzin

PRIVATE EQUITY FIRMS

Carlyle Group promoted 60 professionals, including five to partner, 22 to managing director and 33 to principal and director. The new partners are Rich Dunne, AlpInvest, New York, Norma Kuntz, fund management, Washington, Matthew Savino, global capital markets, New York, Sarah Schwarzschild, metropolitan real estate, New York, and Ling Yang, Asia buyout, Shanghai. And Edward “Ted” O’Byrne has joined the Carlyle Aviation Partners unit as a managing director and co-head of aviation. O’Byrne joins after 11 years with AerCap Holdings NV.

General Atlantic promoted Aaron Goldman and Paul Stamas to co-head its investments in financial services. Goldman and Stamas had been managing directors. Goldman joined GA in 2006 and will be based in London. Stamas, with the firm since 2010, will work out of New York. They succeed Jon Korngold, who joined Blackstone Group to launch a growth-investing unit.

General Atlantic also tapped Justin Kotzin an operating partner and head of debt capital markets. Kotzin most recently was managing director in the leveraged and acquisition finance syndicate group at Morgan Stanley.

Apollo Global Management promoted Anthony Civale, currently lead partner and COO, and CFO Martin Kelly to serve as co-COOs. Civale and Kelly will oversee Apollo’s business operations and corporate infrastructure. They work closely with Co-Presidents James Zelter and Scott Kleinman.

Kline Hill Partners, the Greenwich, Connecticut, small-market-focused secondaries shop, last year hired Aristidis Economou and Kathryn Cholko as deal associates. Economou joined from Deutsche Bank and Cholko from Deloitte. More recently, Kline Hill hired Alyson Seufert as an executive assistant, Eric Giorno as a junior fund accountant and James Bradshaw as a deal associate. Seufert had been an executive assistant at Greenfield Partners, Giorno graduated from Pace University in December, and Bradshaw was an assistant manager at Deloitte.

Onex Corp promoted Jonathan Mueller to managing director. He’s responsible for the Canadian firm’s activity in Europe’s automation, aerospace and transportation industries. He also supports origination efforts in the German-speaking region. Before joining Onex in 2011, Mueller was an associate at Boston Consulting Group.

Sumeru Equity Partners promoted Mark Haller to principal. Haller joined Silver Lake SumeruSilver Lake’s middle-market investment team, in 2012.

Fireman Capital Partners hired Wes Mendenhall as a principal to focus on business development and investor relationships. Mendenhall previously was director in global banking and markets for Bank of America Merrill Lynch cross-asset solutions group.

ElmTree Funds named Rick Eiseman senior vice president of operations and fund management. Eiseman was SVP of asset management for Gramercy Property Trust’s office portfolio from 2016 to 2018.

Star Mountain Capital: John Robertshaw joined as a senior adviser. Robertshaw is a co-founder and chairman of iCapital Network. He is a former vice chairman of Credit Suisse Securities (USA).

Noble Investment Group: Emily Feeney joined the firm as manager of capital markets and investments. She was previously with Hodges Ward Elliott.

Paine Schwartz Partners promoted John Novak to managing director, Alex Corbacho to director and Brian Thies to principal.

Pine Brook promoted Ted Maa and Scott Schaen to partner. Maa joined Pine Brook’s energy team in 2012, prior to which he was a vice president at Denham Capital. Schaen joined the firm in 2010, prior to which he worked at Lightyear Capital.

Ares Management: David Roth joined as a partner in the Ares Real Estate Group and head of U.S. real estate PE. Most recently, Roth was a senior managing director at Blackstone.

CIP Capital promoted Kevin Formica to vice president and hired Michael Grady as a principal for its senior investment team. Formica joined the middle-market PE firm in 2014. Grady most recently was a senior vice president in the direct PE group at Partners Group.

PORTFOLIO COMPANIES

Angel Island Capital appointed Nicole J. Macarchuk COO and general counsel and Robert Ryan CFO. Macarchuk is former managing director and general counsel of public markets at KKR. Ryan is ex-COO and CFO of Archview Investment Group. Angel Island is a specialty-finance portfolio company of Golden Gate Capital.

Kolmac Outpatient Recovery Centers, a portfolio company of WindRose Health Investors, named Wayne Sensor CEO. He succeeds Mark Santangelo, who retired. Sensor is former president of Direct Patient Logistics.

SERVICE PROVIDERS

Skyway Capital Markets added an investment-banking team, naming Beth Cahill senior managing director. Cahill previously was senior managing director at CEA. Her team at Skyway includes Michael Johnson as managing director.

Stonington Capital Advisors named Dan Rudgers a senior managing director. Most recently, Rudgers held a senior distribution role at First Avenue Partners and was previously a managing director on Lazard’s private fund advisory team.

Gen II Fund Services, a PE-fund administrator, promoted Merryn Rosewall to principal, quality control.

Piper Jaffray: Robert Berstein joined as a managing director focused on internet and digital media within technology IB. Berstein joins from DCS Advisory (formerly Signal Hill).

LIMITED PARTNERS

Carlson Private Capital Partners, a middle-market investment firm formed by the Carlson family, named Emma Gergen a vice president and Ali Stewart an associate. Gergen joins from Norwest Equity Partners and Stewart from Northwestern Mutual Capital.
