TCV’s Sean Giese joins KKR tech spinout True Wind

  • Giese worked for TCV more than a decade
  • Involved in several tech deals, including Twilio
  • True Wind closed debut fund in 2016

Sean Giese, a longtime principal at Technology Crossover Ventures, has left the firm to join technology-focused True Wind Capital as a principal.

Giese spent more than a decade at TCV, according to his LinkedIn profile. Among the tech investments he worked on were Actifio, Cradlepoint, Datto, ExtraHop, Fuze, GoDaddy and Twilio, according to True Wind’s website.

Giese is now one of four principals at True Wind, which closed on about $560 million for its debut fund in 2016. The others are Matt Wilson, Brandon Van Buren and Aaron Matto.

San Francisco-based True Wind was formed in 2014 by Founding Partners Adam Clammer and Jamie Greene, who previously co-founded KKR’s global technology group. Clammer joined KKR in 1995, Greene in 1986.

True Wind focuses on lower-middle-market investments in information technology and technology-enabled services, according to its Form ADV. It made its first investment in 2016, investing in The Switch, a video-service provider for live sports events and other entertainment. The investment supported the company’s acquisition of Pacific Television Center.

More recently, True Wind acquired ARI Network Services, which provides SaaS, software tools and marketing services, in a take-private with an enterprise value of about $140 million, or $7.10 per share.

A spokeswoman for TCV did not respond to a request for comment Monday.
