Carlyle adds chief digital officer to drive innovation in portfolio companies

Carlyle Group hired Matt Anderson as its chief digital officer to drive innovation and growth in Carlyle’s portfolio companies, the firm told Buyouts.

Anderson joined Carlyle from Arrow Electronics, where he was a president and chief digital officer, on Sept. 30.

Anderson will be responsible for development and implementation of digital transformation strategies to help Carlyle’s portfolio companies grow. Anderson will also assist Carlyle’s investment teams in finding such opportunities during the diligence process. He will identify and execute new strategies in digital, data and analytics and other technologies, build an ecosystem of experts and suppliers, and play a leading role in CEO mentorship, the firm said.

The chief digital officer is a new position for Carlyle. The firm has created the role to continue adding value through operational improvement, according to Peter Clare, co-chief investment officer at Carlyle.

Blackstone Group, in 2011, hired William Murphy as its chief technology officer to lead Blackstone’s innovation team. Murphy is responsible for the firm’s use of technology along with a strategic technology investment portfolio.

KKR & Co also has a global head of innovation and technology Usman Rabbani, who oversees technology related value creation strategies across the global KKR portfolio.

Along with Anderson, Carlyle also hired Stefan Grunwald, former senior vice president of strategic sourcing and procurement at Cardinal Health. Grunwald joined Carlyle as its chief procurement officer.
