Eugene Chung has joined TechStars as Managing Director for the New York City program. He joins from New Enterprise Associates where he helped manage NYC-area investments BuzzFeed and Bedrocket. Earlier in his career, Chung worked at Pixar Animation Studios, and as an energy investor at Warburg Pincus.
I’m thrilled to introduce our new Managing Director for our NYC program, Eugene Chung. Eugene was formerly with New Enterprise Associates where he helped manage NYC-area investments BuzzFeed and Bedrocket. Prior to NEA Eugene was at Pixar Animation Studios, where he worked on Oscar-winning films such as The Incredibles and Up and programmed an application that automated the analysis of a film’s story development. Earlier in his career, Eugene was an energy investor at Warburg Pincus and an investment banker at Morgan Stanley. He graduated in the top tier of his class as a Baker Scholar at Harvard Business School. Eugene is also an indie film director and he previously worked in the rural Philippines with Unitus, a global microfinance accelerator. He’s been a mentor at TechStars in NYC helping companies such as Poptip, Moveline, Bondsy, Condition One, Classtivity, Wander, and Pickie and has also written about TechStars in the Harvard Business Review.
We interviewed thirty-five highly qualified candidates for this position and Eugene received our only offer. We are ecstatic that he accepted. Long time Managing Director Nicole Glaros (of TechStars Boulder) is serving as co-Managing Director and will be based with Eugene in NYC through the next class. I will also be present for large portions of the program as well, helping get Eugene up to speed. Applicant interest in TechStars in New York City is at an all-time high as we received more than 1,700 applications for our spring session of 2013.
A huge thanks is due to our founders, mentors and community who helped us sort through so many great candidates in order to find Eugene. Please join me in welcoming Eugene to our team. Eugene, welcome to the fold! You’re getting some good early reactions!
“Eugene is perfect for this role, and I’m excited for him. As a member of NEA’s investment team, he has consistently provided great analysis and ideas about our business both before and since NEA invested in BuzzFeed. New York entrepreneurs and the larger tech community will be lucky to have him take on such an important role.” – Jon Steinberg, President and COO of BuzzFeed and mentor at TechStars
“Eugene has a keen eye for great companies and teams and he has an uncanny knack at generating deal flow and building relationships. I know he will do an incredible job as Managing Director at TechStars. We will miss him.” – Harry Weller, General Partner at NEA
“Eugene is one of the most highly connected investors when it comes to founders, hackers, and designers in NYC. He thinks thoughtfully about a team’s vision, and doesn’t hold back when giving critical advice to help move the business forward. His home-grown personal network of NYC’s best thinkers and doers have already benefited from his willingness to serve as a coach who pushes results forward; I can’t wait to see how Eugene can have an even more impactful effect on growing businesses in the city.” – Kelsey Falter, Founder of Poptip, TechStars NYC 2012
