Gene Wolfson has joined Catalyst Investors as a general partner. He previously was a managing director with Citigroup, in charge of the distressed equity trading group.
Catalyst Investors, a growth private equity firm, has appointed Gene Wolfson as general partner. Wolfson is responsible for expanding the firm’s investment scope across public and capital markets and for augmenting assets under management. He will introduce Catalyst Investors’ unique research approach to a wider audience, while expanding the business to include joint venture and co-investment opportunities. Wolfson joins Catalyst Investors from Citigroup, where he served as managing director, leading the distressed equity trading group.
“A key part of Catalyst’s strategy is finding undervalued companies in high-growth industries. Given the current market environment, it is imperative to include public companies in our investment search,” said Brian Rich, managing partner of Catalyst Investors. “We have known Gene since our time at TD Bank where he assisted in exit and hedging strategies. His expertise in capital markets will help create more diverse investment opportunities, enable our portfolio companies to thrive, and provide unique insight upon exit. Most importantly, he will be a great ambassador for the Catalyst brand among potential new investors.”
Catalyst Investors is a top-down, research-oriented mid-market private equity fund. The firm employs a strong knowledge and understanding of target sectors and maintains deep involvement with its portfolio companies.
“The performance of Catalyst Investors is one of the industry’s best kept secrets,” said Wolfson. “Catalyst is a firm that has always punched above its weight and has been incredibly successful by focusing on the right industries and the right companies. It’s a unique proactive philosophy, and I’m excited to be a part of it.”
With more than 20 years of capital market experience, Wolfson recently completed the restructuring of Citigroup’s distressed and microcap equity trading businesses. He joined Citigroup in August of 2006 as part of the company’s acquisition of the TD Waterhouse capital markets business, of which Wolfson was president and founder. He led the successful integration of the TD Waterhouse business and played a key role in expanding client relationships at Citigroup while managing several strategic initiatives.
Earlier in his career, Wolfson founded Gateway Capital Investment Group which became part of Toronto Dominion bank. His team became the foundation for TD Bank’s U.S. Equity trading unit.
