General Atlantic said Sept. 11 that Henri de Castries has joined as chairman of Europe and special adviser. He is the former chairman and CEO of AXA Group.

In his roles as Chairman of Europe and special advisor, Mr. de Castries will advise General Atlantic’s investment teams in evaluating investment opportunities in the region and assisting in value creation across the firm’s existing global portfolio companies. Prior to AXA, he served in the French Treasury Department, during which time he was appointed to oversee foreign exchange markets and balance of payments. Currently, Mr. de Castries serves as Chairman of the French think tank, Institut Montaigne. He also serves as a non-executive director of HSBC Group, Nestlé S.A. and the French National Foundation for Political Science. Until 2016, Mr. de Castries served 2 as a member of the Advisory Board of Tsinghua University School of Economics and Management.
