Novell Inc. has rejected a takeover offer from Elliott Associates LP. The company, an IT management software and Linux producer, will explore strategic alternatives on its own.

Spark Networks, an online personals services company, retained Piper Jaffray & Co. to advice it on its strategic alternatives following an offer from Great Hill Partners.

MedCath Corp. has decided to pursue strategic alternatives for its nine remaining hospitals.

Winfield, Illinois-based Home National Bank has hired Paul M. Homan to head its new management team and assist the company in exploring strategic alternatives.

GMAC, which is seeking buyers, has received interest from BlackRock and Blackstone Group.

Liberty Media has dropped out of the running for MGM.

Steel maker Commercial Metals, publicly traded, has been the subject of takeover rumours.

Fellow steel maker AK Steel has also been the subject of takeover rumours.
