Makena Capital Management has named Kevin Clayton as vice chairman. Clayton, who is a former principal at Oaktree Capital Management LP, will also join Makena’s board of directors. Also, Makena has added now retired U.S. foreign diplomat William Burns to the board of directors and named him a special advisor. Burns is the president of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. He has also served as Deputy Secretary of State under John Kerry and Hillary Clinton and was U.S. Ambassador to Jordan under President Bill Clinton and U.S. Ambassador to Russia under President George W. Bush.

MENLO PARK, Calif.—September 16, 2015—Makena Capital Management, a global, multi-asset class investment manager overseeing $20 billion of assets for clients worldwide, today announced the appointment of Kevin Clayton, a former Principal of Oaktree Capital Management, L.P., as Vice Chairman of the company and the Board of Directors, and of William Burns, President of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, as a member of the Board of Directors and a Special Advisor.

“While we are very proud of the progress we have made serving our clients over our firm’s first decade, we have a culture of continuously seeking to enhance our investment and service capabilities,” said David Burke, CEO of Makena. “It is in this spirit that we welcome Kevin and Bill to our team with the strong conviction that their experiences will inform and add value to the continued development and maturation of Makena as a firm and an investment platform.”

Founded by the senior management of leading North American endowments and foundations, Makena manages long-term investment portfolios guided by the core tenets of the endowment model, designed to balance near-term payout needs with the preservation and growth of multi-generational wealth. The firm’s investment strategies combine traditional liquid securities with allocations to alternative assets, including private equity, venture capital, real estate, natural resources, and long/short and absolute return strategies. Makena’s steady approach to strategic and tactical asset allocation is enhanced by global manager selection expertise in the core investment asset classes. The firm’s clients include endowments and foundations, family offices, pension funds, insurance companies, and international financial institutions with perpetual capital.
Clayton, who most recently served as interim president of Lehigh University, was an early partner of Oaktree Capital Management, one of the most respected firms in the asset management industry. He joins the Makena partnership in a full time capacity, and will establish a new office for Makena in the New York area. Clayton will leverage his expertise in building and managing relationships with existing clients and cultivating new client relationships, as well as help guide the overall strategic development of the firm.

“Makena is a truly special organization and a team that is uniquely built and positioned to address the global investing challenges facing institutions today,” Clayton said. “From investment strategy to risk management and execution, I have always been impressed by the team’s thoughtful approach and am excited by the opportunity to help Makena’s clients continue to achieve investment success.”

Burns has had a distinguished 33-year career as a senior diplomat, serving as Deputy Secretary of State under John Kerry and Hillary Clinton, U.S. Ambassador to Jordan under President Bill Clinton, and U.S. Ambassador to Russia under President George W. Bush. He brings extensive geopolitical knowledge to the Board’s deliberations as Makena applies its intellectual capital to the management of the firm’s investment portfolio.
“I am honored to join a Board that already benefits from the expertise and guidance of such distinguished individuals as Dr. Condoleezza Rice and Mr. Ng Kok Song,” Burns stated. “I look forward to bringing my experience to the dialogue, and hopefully adding further dimension to Makena’s global perspective.”
