MocoSpace Acquires Location-Based Mobile Games Platform Geocade
Today MocoSpace, the largest entertainment destination on the mobile Internet, is announcing the acquisition of Geocade, a location-based social games platform that is used in games that have been downloaded more than 30 million times. As part of the acquisition, Geocade founder and CEO Jim Caralis will join MocoSpace as vice president of MocoSpace’s HTML5 game platform. Caralis will oversee the development of the game platform and its feature set, which now supports location. The new location capabilities will be integrated into MocoSpace’s latest in-house game, Rise to Fame, the company’s first ever location-aware HTML5 mobile game which is launching this week.
With this acquisition, MocoSpace will continue to grow its active community of gamer developers, whose games are racking up more than one million hours of game play per day. Geocade will eventually merge with MocoSpace’s platform to offer developers on both platforms the same features, as well as access to one of the largest gaming audiences on mobile.
“Two pioneers are joining forces today,” said Caralis. “MocoSpace created the first mobile social network and HMTL5 games platform. Combine that with our industry first location-based social games company and we have the recipe for a completely new game experience – beyond anything we’ve seen to date.”
As a part of this growth, MocoSpace is unveiling the first ever location-aware HTML5 title: Rise to Fame. The game turns its players into actors vying for stardom by trying out for different roles. Players need to check in to different locations to unlock new roles.
“The Geocade acquisition furthers our aggressive push into mobile social gaming, which has been a major success for our company in a relatively short time,” said Justin Siegel, CEO of MocoSpace. “In less than a year, we’ve launched twenty HTML5 games. Now thanks to Geocade, we plan to expand our leadership in the mobile HTML5 space with an ambitious roadmap for our platform.”
Geocade has powered some of the most popular iOS and Android titles including Paper Toss, Rag Doll Blaster, Enigmo, Falling Balls and Space Ninja, which have seen a combined total of 30 million downloads.
MocoSpace is the largest entertainment destination on the mobile Internet, with twenty-two million registered users. Every day, one million games are played on the MocoSpace Game Platform. For a young, multicultural, on-the-go generation, MocoSpace is the mobile community of choice for playing games, making friends, having fun and staying connected. MocoSpace is free and available on any Web-enabled mobile phone. Founded in 2005, MocoSpace is based in Boston, Massachusetts, and is backed by General Catalyst and Softbank Capital.
