PE-backed Alex Apparel recruits Kelly as CEO

Alex Apparel Group, which is backed by Atlantic Street Capital, has hired Colleen Kelly as CEO. She replaces the company’s co-founder Dean Brizel who will become chairman. Based in New York City, Alex Apparel is a designer of women’s evening wear.


NEW YORK, February 18, 2015 – Alex Apparel Group, Inc., a leading designer/manufacturer of women’s eveningwear sold under the Alex Evenings and Kay Unger brands, today announced the appointment of Colleen Kelly as Chief Executive Officer. Ms. Kelly replaces Dean Brizel, who co-founded the company in 1989 and now will become Chairman.

Mr. Brizel, said, “Alex Apparel is a stronger company today and we continue to grow our business and strengthen our partnerships with department stores. Colleen’s appointment is a reflection of the momentum we are building in our business. I am pleased to have led this company for over 25 years and, as Chairman and major shareholder, I will remain active in helping to guide the company’s strategic direction going forward.”

Commenting on her new position, Ms. Kelly, said, “Alex Evenings and Kay Unger have been leaders in designing elegant women’s evening wear for over 25 years and I am very excited about this new and challenging opportunity. I look forward to working with Dean and the company’s strong management team to build on our past success.”

Ms. Kelly is an apparel and retail industry veteran with over 30 years of experience in growing public and private companies. She held the role of Group President of Wholesale North America at Tommy Hilfiger from 2006 – 2011 and spearheaded the exclusive partnership with Macy’s. She also served with Warnaco Inc. from 2002 – 2006 as President, Calvin Klein Jeans, and from 2000 – 2002 Ms. Kelly was a senior executive with Donna Karan International. Since 2011 she has been President of Kahn Lucas, one of the largest, privately owned manufacturers of girl’s apparel.
