PE-backed Kahala buys Planet Smoothie and Tasti D‑Lite brands

Kahala Brands, a quick-service restaurant franchising business, has bought the Planet Smoothie and Tasti D‑Lite brands based in Brentwood, Tennessee. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Kahala said the acquisitions strengthen its leadership position in the healthy treats segment. It said it will consolidate operations and run the franchising platform for both brands from the company’s headquarters in Scottsdale, Arizona. Kahala is a portfolio investment of Canadian private equity firm Serruya Private Equity, which invests on behalf of the Serruya family. It is also backed by the Delavaco Group.

Kahala Brands Announces Purchase Of Planet Smoothie & Tasti D-Lite

Company Grows Smoothie Footprint to More Than 400 Locations Worldwide

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., June 2, 2015 /PRNewswire/ — Scottsdale-based Kahala Brands™ (www.kahalabrands.com), a global leader in the QSR industry, today announced that it now controls 100 percent of the Planet Smoothie® and Tasti D‑Lite™ franchise brands headquartered in Brentwood, Tenn. This purchase expands Kahala Brands’ smoothie concept portfolio to three nationally recognized brands, strengthening its leadership position in the healthy treats segment.

“Planet Smoothie, currently operating over 100 stores with many openings slated over the next three months, is a great addition to our family of smoothie brands. The first Planet Smoothie store opened in Atlanta in 1995 using real fruits and vegetables, as well as its own line of proprietary sweeteners and supplements in its smoothies that are blended fresh-to-order.

Planet Smoothie and Tasti D‑Lite currently have a combined store count of 128 units. Kahala Brands will consolidate the corporate operations and run the franchising platform for both brands from its headquarters in Scottsdale, Arizona.
