Riverstone Adds General Counsel

Stephen Coats has joined Riverstone Holdings as a managing director and general counsel, a new position. He previously was a partner with law firm Vinson & Ellis.


Riverstone Holdings LLC, a private equity firm specializing exclusively in the energy and power sectors, announced today that Stephen Coats has joined as a Managing Director and as General Counsel, a new position. Mr. Coats joins Riverstone from the law firm Vinson & Elkins L.L.P., where he was a partner.

David M. Leuschen and Pierre F. Lapeyre, Jr., Co-Founders of Riverstone Holdings, said, We are very pleased that Stephen has agreed to join us. Mr. Coats, 37, has extensive experience in the energy industry. While at Vinson & Elkins, a firm specializing in the energy sector, Mr. Coats focused on domestic and cross-border mergers, acquisitions and divestitures work. He has also served as outside counsel to Riverstone in several transactions.

Mr. Coats said, Riverstone is one of the most respected private equity firms in the energy and power industry. I look forward to joining such a talented team and to working closely with David and Pierre.

Mr. Coats received a B.A. in government from the University of Texas at Austin in 1993 and a J.D. from the University of Texas School of Law in 1997. He is licensed to practice law in both the State of New York and the State of Texas
