If there’s one thing that private equity pros know how to do, it’s raise money. So it shouldn’t have been too surprising when former Bain Capital chief Mitt Romney announced that his presidential campaign committee had scored $23 million in Q1 donations. This puts him well ahead of GOP rivals like McCain and Giuliani, and just behind Democratic frontrunners Clinton and Obama.
I’m assuming that a lot of the larger checks come from Romney’s private equity pals, but his campaign is not required to file individual contribution reports with the FEC until April 15. While we wait, here is a list of VCs and LBO pros who opened their checkbooks when Romney ran for Massachusetts governor in 2002: Romney_Donors1.xls
