Global law firm Ropes & Gray has appointed Jieni Gu as a partner for its M&A practice. Previously, Gu worked at the Shanghai office of Weil, Gotschal & Manges where she served as counsel in the M&A and private equity groups.
International law firm Ropes & Gray announced today that Jieni Gu has joined its mergers & acquisitions practice as a partner. She will be based in the firm’s Shanghai office. The addition of Ms. Gu will enhance the firm’s ability to serve corporate clients in China as they increasingly seek to pursue strategic transactional opportunities on a global scale.
Ms. Gu brings a wealth of experience in cross-border M&A, private equity, foreign direct investment, and general corporate matters. She has advised on various complex transactional and regulatory matters for multinational companies as well as major state-owned Chinese enterprises across a wide range of industry sectors including life sciences, financial institutions, real estate, manufacturing, and energy and natural resources. Her Chinese clients have included Shenhua Group, HNA Group and Hill House Capital.
Ms. Gu joins Ropes & Gray from the Shanghai office of Weil, Gotshal & Manges, where she was counsel in the M&A and private equity groups. Prior to that, she practiced at Sullivan & Cromwell in New York and Beijing.
“Jieni’s experience, particularly with respect to China-outbound private sector transactions, adds substantial depth to our strategic M&A practice in China,” said Arthur Mok, regional managing partner of Ropes & Gray in Asia. “She is an extremely versatile attorney who has local insights and global perspective, and she is a talent that will add unique value for our clients in China and across Asia. We are excited to welcome Jieni to the firm.”
“We are delighted to have Jieni join our M&A practice,” said James Lidbury, partner at Ropes & Gray in Hong Kong and co-head of the firm’s M&A practice. “Her experience adds depth to our team, enabling us to provide comprehensive guidance to our clients as many businesses in China look to expand their footprint globally through cross-border M&A transactions.”
Ropes & Gray’s recent deals in Asia include advising the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board in its acquisition of an approximately 20 percent interest in Homeplus, Tesco’s South Korean business, for $534 million; advising The Carlyle Group on its acquisition of a stake in Metropolis Healthcare Limited, a pathology laboratories chain, from Dr. GSK Velu and his affiliates; and advising a Blackstone-led consortium in its acquisition of Pactera Technology International Ltd.
Ms. Gu received her J.D. from Duke University Law School and her master’s degree in law from Peking University School of Law, where she also received her undergraduate degree in law.
“I am thrilled to join Ropes & Gray,” said Ms. Gu. “I look forward to working with a team of well-rounded lawyers with strong M&A practices as well as teams from other practice groups within the firm. Collectively, we can offer the highest level of service to our clients.”
Ms. Gu’s arrival at the firm demonstrates Ropes & Gray’s continued commitment to expand its M&A and private equity practices in Asia and around the world. Daniel Yeh joined the firm as a private equity partner in Hong Kong in August 2015, while John Sorkin joined the firm as partner in the M&A practice in New York earlier this month.
