RunKeeper Gets $10M From Spark, Steve Case’s Revolution, OATV

RunKeeper said Monday it raised $10 million in a round led by Spark Capital and joined by existing investor OATV, the venture arm of O’Reilly Media, and new investor Revolution Ventures, which is co-founded by Steve Case, the co-founder of AOL. The new money will enable the Boston company to expand its staff and improve products.

What’s Next for RunKeeper

Posted on November 21, 2011 by Jason Jacobs

It’s amazing that it’s already been more than three years since we launched RunKeeper. In that time, we’ve assembled an incredible 14-person team, built a core product being used by millions of people around the world, and with the recent launch of our Health Graph API, have been creating a vibrant ecosystem of third-party devices and applications that integrate with the core RunKeeper experience.

We’ve come a long way from our humble beginnings as a simple iPhone app, yet we’ve only just scratched the surface of the broader vision we’re heading towards. Along the way, it’s become clear that in order to fully execute against this vision, we still have an enormous amount of progress to make across all aspects of our business.

We’re thrilled to announce today that we’ve raised an additional $10 million in funding to do just that. The round was led by Spark Capital (investors in Twitter, Tumblr, Foursquare), with participation from existing investor OATV (the venture arm of O’Reilly Media), and new investor Revolution Ventures (founded by its Chairman Steve Case, the co-founder of AOL, and Revolution Ventures President Tige Savage). The additional capital will enable us to grow our team (see our job openings here), improve our products, and generally move faster as we grow RunKeeper and the Health Graph into all that they can be.

The health/fitness sensor ecosystem has made major strides in the last few years since we started the company. It’s going to come even further in the next few years, as new sensors are appearing almost every week. The timing is right for a consumer health platform to emerge to make sense of all of this health information across categories. We’re excited to keep working towards making RunKeeper that platform, and even more excited about the support we’ve been receiving along the way from our employees, our investors, and our incredible user community.

Thank you for all of your support and encouragement. We feel so fortunate for the opportunity to continue on this journey together.
