ScanCafe, a San Francisco-based provider of photo scanning and restoration services, has raised $4 million in Series B funding led by Sigma Partners.
Photo scanning and restoration service ScanCafe (www.scancafe.com) today announced that it has received $4 million in Series B financing. This round of financing was led by Sigma Partners, a leading early-stage venture capital firm. ScanCafe also secured an additional $1.5 million in debt for a total round of $5.5 million. ScanCafe will use the funding to add bench strength to the company, invest in new technology and expand its global reach.
Since its founding in 2006, ScanCafe has experienced phenomenal growth — the company recently reached a new milestone of 10 million images scanned and has garnered awards for best in class quality. Despite the growth, ScanCafe's original commitment of making it easy to preserve and protect consumers' most precious imagery remains intact.
“Sigma Partners' philosophy of investing in people first makes them a natural partner for ScanCafe,” said Sam Allen, CEO of ScanCafe. “ScanCafe's service is not just about the images we scan and restore, but rather the people whose memories are tied to those images, and we look at our service as a way to connect generations. This investment reflects a continued interest and enthusiasm in ScanCafe's vision and will allow us to deliver this meaningful service to millions more people. Lastly, the Sigma team is made up of operators — they have actually been in the trenches and understand what it takes to grow a strong business. We couldn't have asked for a better investment partner.”
ScanCafe is a photo, negative and slide scanning and restoration service that helps people preserve their most precious memories. ScanCafe has revolutionized the digitizing of imagery by enabling people to simply mail in their boxes of photos, slides and negatives without having to spend time pre-sorting them. ScanCafe scans, professionally restores and organizes all images and provides customers with access to a secure online library to view and select the images they'd like to keep. Customers are only required to pay for the images they wish to keep (with a 50 percent minimum commitment), and all selected images are then burned to a DVD or CD and shipped back to the customer along with all of the originals. Selected images are kept in the online gallery indefinitely, where they can be shared with friends and family. Only ScanCafe offers this unprecedented level of service.
“Sigma believes in strong teams and strong business models. ScanCafe clearly provides both which is evident in the company's growth so far,” said Pete Solvik, Managing Director of Sigma Partners. “We are excited by the opportunities that ScanCafe brings to the world of digital content. They have an exciting digital strategy, and look forward to a successful partnership.”
In addition to its scanning service, ScanCafe has seen growth in photo restoration and image enhancement. This service runs the gamut of having graphics artists completely restore heavily damaged images to conducting minor editing to new digital images that can be uploaded directly to ScanCafe. Professionals and high-end hobbyists find this a fantastic service as they can now spend their time focusing on snapping photos as opposed to the mundane tasks of color enhancement and red-eye reduction.
