Private equity firm Sun Capital Partners has bought the pork processing business of Canadian company Maple Leaf Foods. Financial terms of the deal were not released. Based in Burlington, Ontario, the pork processing operation is the largest such facility in Ontario. It’s not the first food processing deal for Sun Capital: the firm has previously invested in Kansas-based Creekstone Farms Premium Beef and Toronto-based CanGro Foods, among other deals.
We are pleased to announce that an affiliate of Sun Capital Partners, Inc. has completed the acquisition of the Ontario Pork Processing Business (“OPPB”) from Maple Leaf Foods Inc. (TSX: MFI). The purchase price was bridged by an affiliate of Sun Capital Partners,Inc. The transaction closed 41 days after signing the LOI.
The Company is located in Burlington, Ontario, and is the largest pork-processing facility in the province, servicing primarily the Toronto area, the Eastern United States and select international markets. OPPB supplies products to other processors, retailers and food service providers including chilled pork products, specialty and counter-ready products.
Sun Capital Partners affiliates have previously made investments in the food processing industry including: CanGro Foods, a Toronto-based marketer of canned fruit, tomatoes, vegetable, and soup; Creekstone Farms Premium Beef, a leading processor of high quality Black Angus beef; and Sunrise Growers-Frozsun a U.S. supplier, distributor and marketer of frozen and fresh strawberry products.
