Boutique asset manager with 40 year history opens for business in Canada with an office in Toronto, appointing Heather Cooke as Director

Unigestion selects Canada as its next market for growth as the institutional asset manager expands its footprint beyond Europe. Heather Cooke, formerly Partner at Mercer, is appointed to lead the office.

With nearly CAD 500 million already under management in the country through two prestigious mandates, Unigestion is pleased to announce the opening of an office in Toronto, Canada. The move clearly signals Unigestion’s ambition to expand its footprint and enlarge its client base across the whole country.

Unigestion, an investment manager with CAD 16 billion under management, is focused on offering investment solutions and services to institutional investors across four core investment strategies: risk managed equities, private assets, alternative investments and cross asset solutions. With more than 50% of its assets managed through segregated mandates, Unigestion is specialized in designing bespoke investment solutions which take into account specific client requirements and prioritize a rigorous control of risk across a portfolio.

Unigestion believes that its investment management service is ideally suited to the institutional investor segment in Canada, where pension funds, endowments and foundations keen to diversify their manager pool and are open to innovative, differentiated solutions. The tailor-made service proposed by Unigestion will be a refreshing offering within the Canadian market where the pension fund market has been growing every year for the last 10 years. The opening of the Toronto office is a major development in the expansion of Unigestion’s footprint beyond its traditional European markets and demonstrates the firm’s keen desire to maintain a close proximity with the markets where clients are located.

Heather Cooke has been appointed as Director, Institutional Clients, based in Toronto. She will be responsible for building awareness of the company’s offering throughout the institutional investor community in Canada and for driving business across all of its investment solutions. Heather has over 20 years’ experience in investment management, sales and research, and joins Unigestion from Mercer where, since 2010, she was Partner and Leader of Implemented Consulting and Dynamic De-Risking. Heather began her career in 1990 in Retail Sales at Dean Witter Canada. In 1991 she joined Diversified Fund Management (DFMI) and subsequently worked for Northern Trust Global Advisors in progressive investment roles from 1996 to 2006, reaching Senior Vice President, Director of Manager Research and Lead Portfolio Manager. In 2006, Heather joined Rogerscasey Canada, as Managing Director, Investment Counsel. Heather is a CFA Charterholder, and holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Queen’s University in Kingston, Canada.

Fiona Frick, CEO of Unigestion, said: “We are delighted to be opening a local office in Canada, now one of Unigestion’s strategic markets. We believe our customized solutions and service offering is ideally suited to the sophistication and risk aware culture of the Canadian market and we believe we can help institutional investors with the challenges they are facing. Heather’s experience and background will help us deliver this service to the highest standard.”
