RelayRides buys VC-backed SocialStudio

Car-sharing marketplace RelayRides has acquired SocialStudio, a maker of mobile apps JumpCam and FADE. No financial terms were disclosed. RelayRides’s backers include Canaan Partners, Google Ventures, August Capital, Shasta Ventures and Trinity Ventures while SocialStudio was backed by Trinity Ventures and Google Ventures.


VC-backed bitcoin exchange itBit expands team with two hires

Bitcoin exchange itBit has named Daniel Alter as general counsel and chief compliance officer and Kim Petry as chief financial officer. Previously, Alter worked at the New York State Department of Financial Services where he served as general counsel while Petry was CFO of global operations and technology at Broadridge Financial Services. ItBit’s backers include RRE Ventures, Canaan Partners and Liberty City Ventures.


Talena snaps up $12 mln

Silicon Valley-based Talena, a provider of big data availability management solutions, has raised $12 million in funding. The companies backers include Canaan Partners, Intel Capital, ONSET Ventures and Wipro Ventures. In conjunction with the funding, Deepak Kamra, a general partner at Canaan and Shomit Ghose, a partner at ONSET, have been added to Talena’s board of directors.

Antiva Biosciences nabs $16 mln Series B

Biopharmaceutical company Antiva Biosciences Inc has secured $16 million in Series B funding. Canaan Partners and Sofinnova Ventures led the round. In conjunction with the funding, Wende Hutton, a general partner at Canaan Partner and David Kabakoff, an executive partner at Sofinnova Ventures, have been added to Antiva’s board of directors. Also, the company has named Gail Maderis as president and CEO and Steven P. James as executive chairman of the board.

PE-backed RealtyMogul.com taps Li as chief information officer

Los Angeles-based RealtyMogul.com, an online marketplace for real estate investment, has named Timothy Li as chief information officer. Previously, Li has worked at a number of firms in the marketplace lending and FinTech sectors that included LoanDepot, Quick Bridge Funding, Think Finance and JPMorgan Chase. RealtyMogul.com is backed by Sorenson Capital and Canaan Partners.


Onefinestay scores $40 mln Series D

Luxury home hospitality business onefinestay has closed $40 million in Series D funding. The investors included Intel Capital, Quadrant Capital Advisors, Index Ventures and Canaan Partners. Also, the company has made a number of appointments, among them are Tom Singer as chief financial officer, Nick Ruotolo as chief commercial officer and Petros Demetriades as chief technology officer.


Novartis to buy Spinifex for $200 mln

Novartis International AG has agreed to buy Spinifex Pharmaceuticals Inc. for an upfront cash consideration of $200 million plus undisclosed clinical development and regulatory milestone payments. based in Stamford, Connecticut and Melbourne, Australia, Spinifex develops drugs for the treatment of chronic pain. Deutsche Bank advised Spinifex. Spinifex’s investors include Novo A/S, Canaan Partners, GBS Venture Partners, Brandon Capital Partners, Uniseed and UniQuest (University of Queensland, Australia).


Komprise pulls in $6 mln Series A

Campbell, California-based Komprise, a data management software provider, has secured $6 million in Series A funding. Canaan Partners led the round.


Spyryx Biosciences rakes in $18 mln Series A

Research Triangle Park, North Carolina-based Spyryx Biosciences, which develops treatments for respiratory diseases, has raised $18 million in Series A funding. The investors were Canaan Partners, Hatteras Venture Partners and 5AM Ventures. In conjunction with the funding, Dr. Tim Shannon, general partner of Canaan, has been named chairman of Spyryx’s board of directors. Also, Dr. Christy Shaffer, managing director of Hatteras Discovery at Hatteras and Dr. Brian Daniels, venture partner of 5AM, have been added to Spyryx’s board of directors.


Food brand NatureBox picks up $30 mln series C

Food brand NatureBox Inc has raised $30 million in Series C funding. Global Founders Capital led the round with participation from other investors that included Neuberger Berman Private Equity Funds, Kensington Capital Holdings, Valley Oak Investment Partners, General Catalyst Partners, Canaan Partners and Softbank Capital.


Industry Ventures leads $40 mln round for The RealReal

Luxury resale site The RealReal has secured $40 million in Series D funding. Industry Ventures led the round with participation from other investors that included e.ventures Growth, Greycroft Growth, DBL Partners, Canaan Partners and InterWest Partners. In addition to the funding, Cynthia Ringo of DBL Partners has been added to The RealReal’s board of directors.


Diabetes management platform Glooko racks up $16.5 mln Series B

Palo Alto, California-based diabetes management platform Glooko Inc has received $16.5 million in Series B funding. The investors included Canaan Partners, Medtronic, The Social + Capital Partnership and Samsung. In conjunction with the financing, Wende Hutton of Canaan Partners has been added to Glooko’s board of directors.


Lending platform EVEN Financial scores $2.8 mln seed

New York City-based lending platform EVEN Financial has secured $2.8 million in seed funding. Canaan Partners led the round with participation from other investors that included Lerer Hippeau Ventures, Brooklyn Bridge Ventures, Conversion Capital, Social Leverage and 555 Capital.
