E-commerce site Jet raises $140 mln

Stealth e-commerce startup Jet announced it has raise $140 million in new funding led by Bain Capital Ventures. Also participating in the round are Accel Partners, Coatue Management, General Catalyst Partners, Goldman Sachs, Google Ventures, MentorTech Ventures, New Enterprise Associates, Norwest Venture Partners, Silicon Valley Bank, Temasek, Thrive Capital and others.

Verne raises $98 mln from Stefnir, Wellcome Trust, Novator, General Catalyst

Verne Global said it raised $98 million of Series D funding in a deal led by Stefnir, an Icelandic asset management and private equity firm. The deal was joined by existing investors the Wellcome Trust, Novator Partners and General Catalyst. Verne, the U.K.-based developer of an Icelandic data center, declined to say how much it has raised in total.

Elemental Technologies snags $14.5 mln Series D

Elemental Technologies has closed $14.5 million in Series D financing. Telstra led the round with participation from previous backers General Catalyst Partners, Norwest Venture Partners and Voyager Capital. Based in Portland, Oregon, Elemental Technologies is a provider of software-defined video solutions for multiscreen content delivery.


Bustle racks up $15.5 mln

Bustle, a news site that focuses on women, has closed $15.5 million in funding. General Catalyst Partners led the round with participation from Time Warner Investments, Rothenberg Ventures, 500 Startups and The Social+Capital Fund. Also, the company has appointed Neil Sequeira, managing director at General Catalyst Partners, to its board.

VC-backed ThreatStream expands team with two hires

Redwood City, Calif.-based ThreatStream, a cyber security threat intelligence platform provider, has hired Rick Wescott as vice president of worldwide sales and W. Todd Helfrich as director of federal sales. Previously, Wescott worked at ArcSight where he served as vice president and general manager of public sector sales while Helfrich was at HP. ThreatStream’s backers include General Catalyst Partners, Institutional Venture Partners, Google Ventures and Paladin Capital Group.


VC-backed Datto buys Backupify

Datto, which is backed by General Catalyst Partners, has acquired Backupify. No financial terms were disclosed. Based in Cambridge, Mass., Datto is a provider of backup and recovery solutions for SaaS applications.


Altiscale pulls in $30 mln in Northgate-led round

Altiscale, a Palo Alto, Calif.-based provider of HaaS solutions, has received $30 million in Series B funding. Northgate led the round with participation from return backers Sequoia Capital and General Catalyst Partners. Also, the firm has hired Michael Maciag as chief operating officer.

DataGravity picks up $50 mln Series C

Nashua, New Hampshire-based DataGravity, a data-aware storage platform provider, has closed $50 million in Series C funding. Accel Partners led the round with participation from return backers Andreessen Horowitz, CRV and General Catalyst Partners. Also, Ping Li of Accel Partners has been appointed to DataGravity’s board of directors.


ThreatStream raises $22 mln

ThreatStream said Thursday it raised $22 million in series B funding led by General Catalyst Partners. New investors Institutional Venture Partners and previous investors Google Ventures and Paladin Capital Group also participated. Redwood City, Calif.-based ThreatStream offers a SaaS-based cyber security threat intelligence platform.


Menlo Security attracts $10.5 mln Series A

Menlo Park, Calif.-based Menlo Security, a stealth cyber security start-up, has secured $10.5 million in Series A funding. General Catalyst Partners led the round with participation from Osage University Partners. In conjunction with the funding, Steve Herrod, a managing director at General Catalyst, has been added to Menlo Security’s board.


VISANOW raises $16.1 mln from General Catalyst

VISANOW said it raised $16.1 million from General Catalyst Partners. The online immigration services company also appointed to its board  Karen Mills, former administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administration, General Catalyst XIR and former CEO of Zipcar Scott Griffith, and General Catalyst Managing Director Brian Shortsleeve. General Catalyst leads $9 mln round for homework startup Brainly

Brainly, a social learning network that allows students to help each other with homework, has received $9 million in Series A funding. General Catalyst Partners led the round with participation from other investors that included Point Nine Capital, Learn Capital and Runa Capital. In addition to the funding, Adam Valkin and Nitesh Banta from General Catalyst Partners have been appointed to Brainly’s board of directors. According to the company, the capital infusion will be used to expand its U.S. business and open an office in New York City.


Digital media firm KIN fetches $12 mln Series C

Santa Monica, Calif-based digital media firm KIN has secured $12 million in Series C funding. Corus Entertainment led the round with participation from other investors that include Emil Capital, Mayfield Fund, General Catalyst Partners and Rustic Canyon Partners.
