Wibbitz scores $8 mln Series B

New York City-based text-to-video startup Wibbitz has secured $8 million in Series B funding. NantMobile led the round with participation from return backers Horizon Ventures, lool ventures, Initial Capital and Kima Ventures.


Meta raises $23 mln from Horizon, Draper, BOE, others

Meta said it raised $23 million in a Series A round led by Horizon Ventures, Tim Draper, BOE Optoelectronics and Y Combinator partners Garry Tan and Alexis Ohanian. Also participating in the deal were Danhua Capital, Commodore Partners and Zappos Founder Tony Hsiech’s  Vegas Tech Fund. Meta is developing augmented reality glasses.

Newegg forms partnership with VC-backed BitPay to accept bitcoins

Electronics retailer Newegg has formed a partnership with BitPay to accept bitcoin payments on Newegg.com. In May, BitPay announced it had secured $30 million in Series A funding from Index Ventures, Horizon Ventures, Founders Fund, Felicis Ventures, RRE Ventures, TTV Capital, Sir Richard Branson and AME Cloud Ventures. BitPay’s total capital raised at the time was $32.7 million.

Nokia’s HERE buys VC-backed travel guide app Desti

HERE, which is owned by Nokia, has acquired travel planning app Desti. No financial terms were disclosed. Headquartered in Menlo Park, Calif., Desti was spun out of SRI International in 2011. It was also backed by Horizons Ventures and Carmel Ventures.

Desti Raises Additional Seed Round

iPad travel guide Desti has added $1 million in funding to its seed round from previous investors, including Carmel, SRI International and Horizon Ventures. The latest funding comes as an extension of the company’s initial seed raise in October 2011, bringing Desti’s total funding to $2.55 million.

HowDo Raises Seed Round From Wellington, Horizon, Angel

HowDo said it raised seed funding in a deal led by Wellington Partners and joined by Horizon Ventures, which manages the private venture investments of Li Ka-shing, and angel Peter Read. No financial details were disclosed. The company is developing an instructional app for skills sharing.

Trapit Secures Series A

Web searching facility Trapit has closed a $6.2 million Series A round of venture funding led by Horizon Ventures of Hong Kong. Waze Knows Ways to a $30M Round

Social traffic and navigation company Waze reeled in $30 million in funding from investors including Horizon Ventures Hong Kong, KPCB’s Digital Growth Fund and the VC’s iFund, as well. Backing will be used to boost the app’s growth in China. Joining Waze’s board are John Malloy, Managing Partner of Blue Run Ventures and Jason Wong of Horizon Ventures and Mary Meeker, partner at KPCB, joins the company as a strategic advisor and board observer alongside Josh Silverman, President of American Express US Consumer division and former CEO of Skype.
