BeneStream nets $4.26 mln

New York City-based BeneStream, which connects qualified employees to government health benefits through its product, Medicaid Migration, has secured $4.26 million in funding. Michael Sachs led the Series A round with his firm TLSG Investments. Other backers included Kapor Capital, Relativity Healthcare Partners and Serious Change LP. In conjunction with the funding, Sachs will join the BeneStream board.

Kapor Capital names Schumacher-Hodge its portfolio services director

Oakland-based Kapor Capital, which invests in seed-stage tech startups focused on positive social impact, announced that entrepreneur Mandela Schumacher-Hodge has joined the firm as its portfolio services director.  The firm said Schumacher-Hodge will support the development of its portfolio companies as it relates to business, social impact and diversity and inclusion. Schumacher-Hodge, a former public school teacher and education policy researcher, co-founded San Francisco-based Tioki, a professional social network for educators.

LocoMotive powers forward with $4 mln Series A

LocoMotive Labs, a Berkeley, Calif.-based developer of educational apps for young elementary students, has raised a $4 million Series A financing round co-led by Softbank Ventures Korea and TAL Education Group. Also participating in the round are existing investors K9 Ventures, Kapor Capital, NewSchools Venture Fund, Joe Gleberman, D3Jubilee and Jerry Colonna. The company has now raised $5.15 million in funding to date. As part of the Series A, Sean Lee of Softbank Ventures Korea has joined the board.

Social Venture Fund Provides Seed Funding to Mytonomy

Social Venture Fund, a student-led, Ann Arbor, Michigan-based “impact investing” fund that’s closely affiliated with the University of Michigan, has participated in a seed-stage financing for Mytonomy, a video storytelling platform for college and career advising. Other investors include NewSchools Venture Fund and Kapor Capital. Social Venture Fund makes investments of up to $100,000. Terms of the Mytonomy deal were not disclosed. Two-year-old Mytonomy is based in Washington, D.C.
