According to a recent Preqin survey, more than half (58 percent) of limited partners view small and mid-market buyout funds as the top alternative-investment class. Venture capital followed in second place at 28 percent.

Public-pension funds led the way in money raised (19.5 percent) in 2016 by 16 placement agents that collected a combined $14.7 billion, a survey by Buyouts Insider shows. Endowments and foundations came in second with 16.9 percent and corporate pension funds were third at 13.4 percent.
