Foursquare checks in with $45 mln financing

Jeff Glueck, the newly appointed CEO of New York-based Foursquare, announced via a Medium post this afternoon that the company has raised $45 million in equity funding led by Union Square Ventures. Other investors included Morgan Stanley Alternative Investment Partners, DFJ Growth, Andreessen Horowitz and Spark Capital. In addition, co-founder and CEO Dennis Crowley is moving to an executive chairman position, following the CEO appointment of Glueck, who had been serving as COO.

Quizlet rakes in $12 mln

San Francisco-based digital learning tool Quizlet has secured $12 million in Series A funding. Union Square Ventures and Costanoa Venture Capital led the round with participation from Altos Ventures and Owl Ventures. In addition to the funding, Fred Wilson of USV and Greg Sands of Costanoa have been added to Quizlet’s board.

CircleUp takes in $30 mln Series C

Equity crowdfunding platform CircleUp has secured $30 million in Series C funding. Collaborative Fund led the round with participation from Capital One co-founder Nigel Morris, and former CEOs and presidents of Goldman Sachs, Thomson Reuters and the Stanford Endowment. CircleUp’s other backers include Union Square Ventures, Canaan Partners, Maveron and Rose Park Advisors. According to the company, the capital infusion will be used for product development and personnel hiring.

3D printing service Shapeways snaps up $30 mln

New York City-based Shapeways, a 3D printing service and marketplace, has raised $30 million in funding. INKEF Capital led the round with participation from Hewlett Packard Ventures, Presidio Ventures, Andreessen Horowitz, Union Square Ventures, Index Ventures and Lux Capital. In conjunction with the funding, Robert Jan Galema of INKEF Capital has been named to the Shapeways board.

Clarifai nets $10 mln Series A

New York City-based Clarifai, a provider of image recognition technology, has raised an overall total of $10 million in Series A funding, the company announced in a blog post on its site. Union Square Ventures, Lux Capital and Osage University Partners led the round with participation from Google Ventures, Qualcomm Ventures, Nvidia Ventures, Corazon Capital, LDV Capital and New York University.

VC-backed Etsy files for IPO

Brookyn-based Etsy Inc, a marketplace where people buy and sell “unique goods,” has filed for an IPO. The number of shares to be sold as well as the stock’s pricing terms have yet to be set. Etsy plans on listing the stock on the NASDAQ under the ticker symbol “ETSY.” Goldman, Sachs & Co. and Morgan Stanley & Co. LLC are the lead underwriters. Etsy’s backers include Index Ventures, Union Square Ventures and Accel Partners.

Legal research site Casetext fetches $7 mln

Legal research website Casetext has secured $7 million in Series A funding. Union Square Ventures led the round with participation from Formation 8 and former Thomson Reuters CEO Tom Glocer. In addition to the funding, John Buttrick, a partner at Union Square Ventures, has been added to Casetext’s board.

Andreessen Horowitz backs Stack Exchange

Stack Exchange, a network of question and answer websites, has secured $40 million in funding, the company announced in a blog post on its site. The bulk of that funding comes mostly from Andreessen Horowitz. In addition to the funding, the venture firm’s Chris Dixon will be joining Stack Exchange’s board of directors as an observer.
