SAN FRANCISCO–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Splunk Inc. (NASDAQ: SPLK), provider of the leading software platform for real-time operational intelligence, today announced that it has appointed Todd Papaioannou as chief technology officer (CTO). Papaioannou will report directly to Splunk chairman and CEO Godfrey Sullivan. In his role as CTO, Papaioannou will help define Splunk’s technology vision, strategy and roadmap. Splunk co-founder and former CTO Erik Swan will remain at Splunk as a senior advisor to the executive team.
Papaioannou joins Splunk from Data Collective Venture Capital (DCVC), a venture capital firm where he was an entrepreneur-in-residence. Prior to DCVC, he was co-founder and CEO of Continuuity, an early stage big data startup. Papaioannou also worked at Yahoo! serving as vice president, chief cloud architect and distinguished fellow responsible for driving the technical and strategic direction of the Yahoo! Cloud and Hadoop teams. He was instrumental in the spinoff of HortonWorks from Yahoo! and still serves on HortonWorks’ board of advisors. Prior to Yahoo!, Papaioannou spent five years at Teradata, holding positions including CTO of client software and vice president, architecture and emerging technologies. Prior to Teradata, he was chief architect and director of engineering at Greenplum, Inc. He holds a Ph.D. in artificial intelligence and distributed systems from Loughborough University in the U.K.
“It is very hard to hand over the technology reins of a company you started, and frankly, I would not be able to give up those reins to just anyone,” said Swan. “I have known Todd for years and have tremendous respect for him as a leader. I can think of no one better suited to help drive the next phase of innovation at Splunk. Todd has a unique background and depth across enterprise software, cloud, open source, big data, search, developer, big company, startup and much more. He is a great communicator and visionary. Splunk is fortunate to have him join our family.”
“I have followed Splunk’s remarkable success from its earliest days,” said Papaioannou. “I have always been impressed by its unique culture, its top-notch leadership team and its ability to bring the benefits of operational intelligence to thousands of customers. What is most exciting to me is how Splunk is making its technology available for so many different use cases: whether it is operational intelligence on premises or in the cloud for application management, IT ops, security or business analytics, to name a few. As machine data becomes more pervasive, Splunk has an incredible opportunity to help people benefit from it in ways they had never imagined. I am honored to be joining Splunk during this exciting time.”
“We are all indebted to our co-founders Erik Swan and Rob Das for their vision for Splunk,” said Sullivan. “Erik has effectively managed the transition of the Development and CTO roles, which is a rare leadership achievement in young companies. We are pleased to welcome Todd to the Splunk executive team and look forward to his contributions in architecture and product strategy. Todd’s reputation as a thought leader in big data, cloud and open source is a strong match to our vision.”
