Cabot Square CapitalStaffs Up for Fund Launch

Matthew Hudson in November left leading law firm SJ Berwin & Co to join Cabot Square Capital, a London-based principal finance house, as chief counsel and investment director.

Established in 1996 by John Van Deventer, formerly of Goldman Sachs & Co, and John Clark, previously with Lehman Brothers, Cabot Square Capital manages and advises funds focusing on three main areas: principal finance and private equity; corporate restructurings and distressed debt; and European high-yield bonds. Credit Suisse First Boston is Cabot Square Capital’s core investor.

Matthew Hudson helped to establish the private equity and venture capital group at SJ Berwin and, over the past 11 years, has advised private equity funds across the entire investment stage spectrum and acted for private equity houses and management teams in some of the largest buyouts in Europe.

Matthew Hudson joins Cabot Square Capital’s founders and another investment director, Keith Maddin, who joined the group this year from British Petroleum (BP). He had undertaken a series of international management assignments at BP, most recently filling the role of head of retail strategy and asset management.

John Van Deventer said the appointments “underline Cabot Square Capital’s commitment to expand in key markets across the UK and Europe” and adding “Both are senior players with a wealth of experience and will be a major influence in our fund raising and investment deal flow”.

Although it has completed substantial investments in its chosen sectors, Cabot Square Capital has kept a remarkably low profile since its inception. That looks set to change, because Cabot Square Capital is expected to embark on an external fund-raising exercise in the near future.
