By circumventing fund sponsors, limited partners don’t have to pay management fees and carry, although that doesn’t mean deals come cheap. Someone has to shoulder the cost of deal-origination, due diligence, and management of the portfolio. It remains to be seen just how far the do-it-yourself movement will go.
