Fred Hassan Joins Warburg Pincus

Fred Hassan has joined Warburg Pincus as a senior advisor, focused on the healthcare sector. He had served as chairman and CEO of Schering-Plough Corp. from 2003 until it was acquired earlier this month by Merck & Co.

Warburg Pincus, a leading global private equity firm, announces the appointment of Fred Hassan as a Senior Advisor. Mr. Hassan served as Chairman and CEO of Schering-Plough Corporation from 2003 until its acquisition by Merck & Co., Inc. on November 3.

Before joining Schering-Plough, he served as Chairman and CEO of Pharmacia Corporation until the company was acquired by Pfizer Inc. in 2003. From 1997 to 2000, Mr. Hassan was CEO of Pharmacia & Upjohn, Inc., which merged with Monsanto Company in 2000 to become Pharmacia Corporation. From 1972 to 1997, he served in various senior management roles at major pharmaceutical companies.

Mr. Hassan recently joined the Board of Directors of Bausch & Lomb and Time Warner Inc. He is also the Lead Director on the Board of Avon Products, Inc., where he has served since 1999.

At Warburg Pincus, he will advise our Healthcare Group and provide strategic counsel across the firm’s
portfolio.
