Alvarez & Marsal Staffs Up

Alvarez & Marsal has added nine senior professionals to its private equity performance improvement unit: Ron Bernard and Stephen Griffin as managing directors in New York and Boston, respectively; Joel Mostrom as a senior director in New York; Paul Kosturos as a director in San Francisco; and Fabiana Fakhoury, Simon Flax, Jeffrey Klein, Jennifer Kim and Daniel Schellenberg as directors in New York. Bernard previously was president of LWB Media Consulting, while Griffin was founder of G5 Capital.


Global professional services firm Alvarez & Marsal has added nine senior professionals to its Private Equity Performance Improvement practice. The announcement comes on the heels of news that the firm recently added eight professionals focused on private equity services to its transaction advisory and tax practices.

Joining the firm are: Ron Bernard and Stephen Griffin as managing directors in New York and Boston, respectively; Joel Mostrom as a senior director in New York; Paul Kosturos as a director in San Francisco; and Fabiana Fakhoury, Simon Flax, Jeffrey Klein, Jennifer Kim and Daniel Schellenberg as directors in New York.

Mr. Bernard brings more than 25 years experience as a senior operating executive across consumer-driven, entertainment and sports industries. Prior to joining A&M, he served as president of LWB Media Consulting, advising large cap and mid cap private equity funds on investments in media-related portfolio companies. Previously, he served as president of the major divisions of two of the nation’s largest sports and entertainment companies and before that, served as chief executive officer of Sekani, Inc., a media licensing and digital asset management company. From 1993 to 2000, Mr. Bernard served as president of NFL Enterprises where he was responsible for four divisions: new media (internet), satellite programming, NFL Films and NFL International. Earlier in his career he held senior management positions at Viacom.

Mr. Griffin specializes in assisting private equity sponsors and their portfolio companies with due diligence and post-acquisition assistance, formulating and evaluating strategic business plans, crisis management and financial restructuring. With more than 15 years of strategic, operational and financial advisory experience, Mr. Griffin has developed expertise in evaluating strategic plans and management’s ability to execute efficiently and effectively. Prior to joining A&M, Mr. Griffin founded G5 Capital, a private equity advisory firm. Earlier in his career he served as a general partner of Point Judith Capital Partners and was a member of KPMG’s information, communication and entertainment practice.

Mr. Mostrom brings significant expertise in developing strategic business plans, operating budgets and restructuring plans, arranging all levels of public and private financing, as well as negotiating acquisitions, divestitures and joint ventures. With more than 20 years of experience, he has served as a senior financial and operating executive of companies ranging in size from a large publicly traded multinational manufacturing company to a small privately owned real estate development company. Prior to joining A&M, he was executive vice president and chief financial officer of Chesapeake Corporation, a publicly traded international supplier of paper and plastic packaging products. Before that, he was chief financial officer and later president of Curtis F. Peterson Inc., a private real estate development company.

Mr. Kosturos specializes in finance and accounting, including interim management positions, SEC reporting, external and internal financial reporting, Sarbanes Oxley compliance including internal controls design and process improvements, shared services processing and ERP system design and implementations. Prior to joining A&M, Mr. Kosturos was the vice president and corporate controller for JDS Uniphase (JDSU), a $1+ billion telecommunications company. Before that, he was director of corporate accounting and consolidations at Calpine Corporation and earlier in his career vice president and chief financial officer of BrightStar Information Technology Group.

Ms. Fakhoury specializes in strategic, corporate finance and performance improvement projects, having worked closely with corporate CFOs to implement capital raising and cost rationalization strategies. Prior to joining A&M, Ms. Fakhoury was a vice president with the investment banking division at HSBC, where she was involved in several M&As, structured loans and ECM deals in a variety of industry sectors. She began her career with the corporate finance division at Ernst & Young.

Mr. Flax brings more than 12 years of business consulting experience and a broad and diverse set of functional and industry experience, including expertise in process design, general and administrative cost efficiency, working capital reduction, corporate strategy and organization design. He has led multiple consulting engagements for private equity-owned middle market companies and served on more than 30 commercial and operational due diligence engagements for various private equity funds. Prior to joining A&M, he was a principal in the private equity practice of Arthur D. Little, Inc. Earlier in his career he worked at Droege & Comp., Booz Allen Hamilton (Booz & Co.) and Accenture.

Mr. Klein specializes in interim management for information technology initiatives, bringing more than 20 years experience delivering IT governance, IT operations and financial reporting projects. Prior to joining A&M, he was a director in Protiviti’s technology risk practice where he focused on IT operations, IT diligence and large scale project assessment and management. Before that, he was with Deloitte Consulting’s CIO services practice, where he provided pre and post transaction IT related services and helped new CIOs craft and execute value creating and business changing initiatives. Earlier in Jeffrey’s career with Deloitte, he focused on ERP, CRM and custom system implementations.

Ms. Kim has more than a decade of industry and consulting expertise and has also served in interim management roles. Her background includes experience in sales force effectiveness, process improvement and organizational redesign for consumer goods and niche manufacturing environments. Prior to joining A&M, she was a principal at Arthur D. Little, Inc. where she was instrumental in business development and key account management in their private equity practice. Earlier in her career she was with Droege & Comp., Booz & Company and AIG.

Dr. Schellenberg has worked with portfolio companies in various industries, leading consulting teams in the US, Europe, Mexico, China and Canada. His background includes significant experience with working capital reduction, production relocation, design and implementation of turnaround concepts, performance improvement concepts, business planning and several due diligences. Prior to joining A&M, he was a principal in the private equity practice of Arthur D. Little, Inc. Before that, he was a senior manager with Droege & Comp., Inc. with a focus on the private equity mid market. Earlier in his career he worked for Roland Berger Strategy Consultants in Germany.
