Dallas, TX, Thursday, October 03, 2019 … Longtime MLBPA certified player representative, Greg Genske, today announced the creation and launch of Gem Agency, in partnership with Hicks Equity Partners, the private equity arm of Tom Hicks and his family. Hicks Equity Partners teamed up with Proficio Capital Partners, a Boston-based Multi-Family office, and select other long-term partners of the firm to consummate the formation of the Gem Agency. Gem Agency is being designed and crafted to serve as a new model in the area of athlete representation, by focusing on a select number of exclusive clients and providing them with individualized and best-in-class services.

At launch, Gem Agency’s list of clients includes Major Leaguers Roberto Osuna of the Houston Astros, Justin Turner of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Tommy Pham of the Tampa Bay Rays.

“While representing athletes for nearly two decades, I have witnessed a major shift in the industry and that’s what inspired the creation of Gem Agency,” stated Genske. “The baseball industry is healthy and lucrative economically, but, today more than ever, major tensions exist in the negotiating relationships between teams and players. That dynamic will serve as the motivation behind every aspect of our new, boutique firm. Gem desires to provide a select number of clients with precedent-setting contracts, personalized care and attention to help them maximize their earnings and serve their interests in a comprehensive and first-class fashion.”

Added Tom Hicks: “As owner of the Texas Rangers, I respected Greg Genske’s approach to contract negotiations, and I admired his resolve and commitment to his clients. It’s because of Greg’s passion, expertise and insightful vision for where the industry is heading, that I look forward to partnering with Greg to launch Gem Agency. By combining our resources, together we will help establish a new and improved business model for the representation industry to follow.”

“I’ve been with Greg Genske since my very first day of pro ball and feel I’ve gotten nothing but up front, honest information every step of the way,” stated Los Angeles Dodgers All-Star infielder, Justin Turner. “From equipment deals to arbitration and free agency, I feel like I have been represented by the best! I look forward to continuing our relationship through Greg’s new agency, and I’m proud to be the first client on board!”

Joining Genske’s Gem Agency staff at this time are MLBPA certified agents Eric Izen and Alex Hicks.

Gem Agency is planning for an aggressive yet prudent growth strategy by vigorously protecting and enhancing the rights of its clients by surrounding them with highly-skilled lawyers and certified player representatives with reputations for successfully negotiating outstanding contracts and record-setting deals at every stage of a player’s career: draft, pre-arbitration, arbitration and free agency. To that end, Gem Agency anticipates announcing staff additions in the coming days and weeks.

Prior to launching Gem Agency, Genske founded Legacy Sports Group and built it into one of the leading sports agencies in the world and served as its president and lead negotiator from 2004 until 2018. During that span, Genske negotiated over $4 billion in player contracts, including CC Sabathia’s then record-setting deal for a pitcher, putting him at or near the top of MLB certified agents. In 2009, he was named to Sports Business Journal’s prestigious Forty Under 40 list, and, more recently, for four years running (2015-18), he has been named as one of the most powerful sports agents in the world by Forbes.

Genske was born and raised in Southern California, where he attended Pepperdine University, receiving his B.S. in Business Administration. He subsequently received his J.D. from renowned University of California at Berkeley School of Law, where for the past four years he has served as a law professor teaching courses on sports law, representing professional athletes and negotiations. Prior to entering the sports industry, he practiced with leading national law firms as a trial attorney and also negotiated multi-million-dollar transactions on behalf of emerging growth and Fortune 500 companies.
